Scroll down and find out more about the procedure for registering a used car!
You've bought a used car. So what next? Before you register it, you have to submit a notification of the vehicle's acquisition. You have 30 days to do so, counting from the date the purchase agreement was signed. Remember to keep an eye on the deadlines, because failing to fulfil this obligation can cost you a fine of between PLN 200 and as much as PLN 1,000. Where do you report the acquisition of a vehicle? Today you can easily do it online, via a trusted profile (profil zaufany). All you need is a scan of the purchase agreement, the personal details of the vehicle's seller and the car's details. The service is free of charge, and the office handles the matter on the spot.
The acquisition has been reported, so it's time to register the second-hand car, to begin with temporarily, so that the office has time to prepare the documents. You need a few documents:
the registration application (you'll fill it in online or in person at the office),
the agreement or invoice confirming that you are the current owner of the vehicle,
proof of payment (below you'll find all the information about the costs),
the current plates and the vehicle registration document, together with information about a
valid technical inspection.
You submit the complete set of documents at the county office (starostwo), the city office or the district office corresponding to your place of residence. If all the documents are in order, you'll receive a temporary registration of the car, valid for 30 calendar days.
The office will register your car within 30 days, you can easily check whether the documents are ready yet on theinfo-car.pl website. The last step will be collecting the vehicle registration documentbe sure to do this before the temporary registration expires. Take a look at the office's website too and check what documents you need to submit on collection, usually it's the temporary permit and the third-party liability (OC) policy. Remember that the whole process may take longer if you provide incomplete documentation.
The price list for registering a used car is the same at every vehicle registration department, regardless of the city or province. Most often drivers pay PLN 161.50which is made up of the cost of the plate (here: a standard one), the registration document, records fees, the temporary permit and the legalisation sticker. You'll pay more if you opt for personalised plates, then the totalcost of registering a second-hand carwill come to PLN 1,081.50. There's also an extra charge for granting power of attorney, the registration will be PLN 17 more expensive.
Tip: if you're buying a car as a private individual from another private individual, then add tax to the costs of registering the used car. The rate is 2% of the market value of the purchased car.
Since 2022 you can save as much as PLN 80! How? If your current plates meet certain requirements, then you don't have to change them, let alone pay for them. In that case you register the used car at the same city office or county office, keeping the letter code of the location. The cost then drops to PLN 80.50.
